+ Position Summary: The Physician Assistant(PA)assists with the patient care and coordination within the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and more specifically works with the Thoracic Surgeons. The PA will support the physicians by evaluating patients, conducting histories and physicals, writing orders, interpreting laboratory and diagnostic testing and performing patient education and assisting in the operation room. Under the supervision of the Thoracic Surgeons, the PA prescribes medications and adjusts dosages of medication. The PA also evaluates patients for additional treatment and with approval from the physician, obtaining consults from other services as warranted. The PA facilitates the management and evaluation of both inpatients and outpatients. The PA functions in a supportive position as an extension of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Department, under the supervision of the Primary and Alternate Supervising Physicians. The PA interacts on a professional level with the medical/ surgical administrative and support staff as well as patient clients. The PA participates in daily rounds,conferences, surgical clinics, surgical procedures in the OR, inpatient care and meetings with the patient?s family when requested. The PA will have a particular role in robotic assisted surgery and is expected to be the first assist during these procedures. Provides technical assistance and continuity of care in both scheduled and emergency procedures. Under the direct supervision of the surgeon to assist in carrying out an operation with optimal results for the patient. The PA is responsible for the coordination and administration of quality patient care in conjunction with the physicians, residents and nurses. Position Requirements: Minimum Education: Required: Bachelors Degree Minimum Experience: Required: Less than one year of previous job-related experience Preferred: 3-5 years of previous job-related experience Licensure/Certifications: Required: CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation),Certified Physician Assistant (NCCPA) Position Responsibilities: SURGICAL PATIENT CARE: Assists in the care of patients within the Department of Surgery. EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE AND SUPPLIES: Become familiar with the equipment necessary to provide the patient care as directed by the attending physician. EDUCATION: Participate in daily morning surgical ICU rounds, conferences and clinics. DOCUMENTATION: Dictate referral letters where indicated. CLINICAL PATIENT CARE:CLINICAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: Perform and document history and physical exams for surgery patients being admitted to the service, as warranted.
