          PRIMARY JOB FUNCTION:
          Provide clinical oversight including diagnosis and treatment for disease processes in research animals under area of responsibility. Also, the opportunity of using incumbent's surgical skills for the purpose of treatment and/or support of our surgical program is available. This position can conduct collaborate studies with researchers to the extent that the incumbent's experience allows, but the main focus is the clinical care and oversight of the research animals. A function of the incumbent may be to assess vendors to ensure the adequacy of the health of all animals received within the facilities of the department and train personnel involved in animal research to use the proper methodology for humane care and valid research to assure compliance with pertinent regulations and laws governing the activities of the department. They will be expected to incorporate the 3 R's (Replacement, Refinement and Reduction) in their daily decision-making, conduct of research oriented activities and provide guidance to research staff.

          CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
          Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.

          Responsible for providing clinical care to all research animals, surgical services through both procedures and investigation of current and new models for research refinement, serving as a functional resource to the IACUC, collaborates with researchers in development of the appropriate animal model usage and providing training to the research investigators and department personnel in regards to laboratory animal care and use.
          Qualifications:

          Skills:
          2-3 years clinical experience is preferable. Good communication and interpersonal skills are required. Technical writing skills and experience is highly desirable. Technical expertise in dosing, bleeding, animal necropsies and minor surgical procedures in laboratory animals are also desirable. For candidates lacking specialty certification (American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine- ACLAM), pursuit of this certification is expected; licensure within the State of Illinois is preferred or should be sought.

          Problem solving skills of this position involve clinical, minor surgical and research associated issues. The candidate is expected to effectively identify concerns which might endanger the well-being or health of the research animals or negatively impact the conduct of meaningful animal research. Must recommend corrective actions to management, and assume the primary responsibility for implementing necessary corrective actions defined by management. This will require the incumbent to use their experience and training to fully work up clinical cases, choose appropriate diagnostic procedures and consult with appropriate individuals or authorities, when required, in order to provide adequate veterinary care.

          Education Requirements: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA accredited or equivalent institution.
