Transport America Optimal Freight Accounting Manager in Chicago, Illinois

_SUMMARY OF POSITION:_

Accountable for the accounting operations of the company, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting controls and records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.

In addition, this role is responsible to support business improvement by meeting personal and departmental goals and objectives timely and effectively.

_POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES:_

Day-to-day responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Leadership

  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives
  • Protect the company's assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls to be in compliant with Canadian public company requirements (similar to Sarbanes Oxley)
  • Partner with leaders on cost saving and other business improvement initiatives
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures

Management of Team

  • Proactively manages performance of team members;completes staff performance reviews thoroughly and timely;identifies, attracts, develops, and recognizes the best talent
  • Encourages effective and efficient personnel performance through team building, leadership, motivation, training, coaching and professional development and growth
  • Manages, develops and/or updates departmental procedures, work instructions and/or measurement systems consistent with company policies, processes and directives
  • Displays open communication with all related personnel of the company
  • Creates and supports a culture of talented, engaged, productive and loyal team members

Reporting

  • Prepare and issue timely and complete financial statements in compliance with GAAP
  • Ensure monthly financials and all required supporting schedules are submitted to Corporate on schedule
  • Partner with Director of Finance in the budgeting and forecasting processes
  • Ensure delivery of quality and meaningful monthly cost vs. budget reporting to internal leaders
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts around financial reporting processes

Compliance

  • Responsible for all reported results in compliance with GAAP
  • Ensure full compliance with all financial reporting and related internal controls including all month-end close controls, vendor and customer related controls, general ledger controls, etc.

Transactions

  • Ensure payroll is completed accurately and processed timely
  • Ensure accounts payable are approved and paid in a timely manner
  • Ensure accounts receivable are collected promptly and customers are invoiced timely
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions

_REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES:_

  • BA/BS degree in Accounting
  • CPA a plus
  • 3-5 years applicable experience, including experience managing staff
  • Creates an environment of collaboration and demonstrates openness to new ideas and opinions
  • Extremely strong communication skills; both verbal and in writing, attentive to nonverbal signals, invites feedback
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects successfully
  • Strong business judgment, decision-making ability and attention to detail
